Maduro: Venezuela open to talks with US on drug trafficking

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has stated that Venezuela is open to negotiating a deal with the United States to combat drug trafficking, even as he remained silent about a reported CIA-led attack on his country last week.

The latest statement, made during an interview, comes as Maduro has maintained a more conciliatory tone toward the US amid Washington's months-long sanctions and military pressure campaign.

This included the release of more than 80 prisoners accused of protesting against his controversial victory in the 2024 elections, the second such release in recent days.

"It's time for both nations to start talking seriously, with data in hand. The US government knows, because we have told many of their spokesmen, that if they want to seriously discuss an agreement to combat drug trafficking, we are ready," Maduro said. 

However, Maduro repeated his accusations that the US is trying to overthrow his government and gain access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves through sanctions and Washington's months-long military pressure campaign.

Asked directly whether he confirmed or denied a US attack on Venezuelan soil, Maduro said that could be something he would talk about in a few days./CNA
