Pope Leo XIV has given his New Year's message for 2026 during the solemn ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica, on the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a feast that also marks the World Day of Peace.

The Pope called on believers to see the new year as an opportunity for spiritual renewal, inviting them to build their lives on the love, mercy and freedom that God brings. He underlined that divine love is the force that brings peace to the hearts of people and to the world.

Pope Leo described Mary, the Mother of God, as a symbol of “the unarmed God,” emphasizing that salvation is not achieved through force or violence, but through forgiveness, love, and welcome. He recalled that Christ, who came into the world as fragile and helpless, shows the true example of the power of peace.

"The Jubilee Year 2025, which ends on January 6, 2026, reminds us of the importance of forgiveness and hope that is manifested in pilgrimages and church services. The teachings of the Jubilee must live in the hearts of the faithful even after the end of the holy year," the Pope said. 

In conclusion, Pope Leo wished that the new year be a spiritual journey for everyone, filled with peace, hope and resurrection, inviting all believers to follow the instructions of the gospel and live with love and solidarity. /CNA
