Israel opens fire on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Israeli fire opened on peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, causing no casualties. The UN peacekeeping force is deployed in the south of the country, in cooperation with the Lebanese army, as part of a ceasefire that took effect in November 2024 between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group.

"Such incidents are occurring too frequently and represent a worrying trend," UNIFIL said in a statement.

Soldiers patrolling southern Lebanon on Monday reported gunfire less than 50 meters from their position. Shortly afterwards, peacekeepers patrolling the same area reported machine gun fire at a distance of approximately 50 meters, with no injuries or damage.

The UN peacekeeping force said that in both cases the fire originated from an Israeli military (IDF) position south of the Blue Line, which marks the border between Lebanon and Israel.

UNIFIL stressed that it had informed Israel in advance of the deployment of its forces in the area, calling on the IDF to cease any aggressive behavior against or near the peacekeepers. Such attacks constitute a serious violation of a resolution adopted by the UN Security Council in 2006, which served as the basis for the agreed ceasefire, UNIFIL noted.

In recent months, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has repeatedly reported Israeli fire against peacekeepers. In one of them, last week, it reported that a peacekeeper was injured. Despite the ceasefire, Israel launches attacks almost daily and carries out operations in southern Lebanon, targeting, as it claims, Hezbollah positions, which it accuses of rearming. Israeli troops also remain in five locations in southern Lebanon, which are considered of strategic importance. /CNA
