At least eight migrants drown on Greek island

Greece's coast guard has recovered the bodies of eight migrants who drowned near the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea, authorities said Monday.

Six of the victims were minors, while the other two were women, the authorities announced.

Greek police found 36 people alive in the northern part of the island of Samos. Meanwhile, three other people who were stuck in a rocky area on this island were rescued by coast guard officers.

Planes and ships helped search and rescue the migrants, the coast guard said.

According to a coast guard officer, authorities were alerted to the incident by a non-governmental organization and estimate that around 50 people were on board the boat that brought them to Samos.

Greece, which lies in the southeastern corner of the European Union, is the preferred gateway to Europe for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into the eastern Greek islands from Turkey in 2015 and 2016. Many drowned trying to make the dangerous journey in flimsy boats.

Their numbers later declined, but started to rise again last year.

Some 54,000 migrants have reached Greece so far this year, the second highest number in southern Europe, after Italy. The vast majority of them arrived by boat, according to data from the United Nations refugee agency, UNFCR./ REL
