Pakistan, 82 people killed in three days as a result of sectarian violence

At least 82 people have been killed and 156 wounded in three days of fierce fighting between sectarians in northwestern Pakistan, a local official said Sunday, according to the AFP news agency.

Pakistan is a majority Sunni Muslim state, but the Kurram region - near the border with Afghanistan - has a large Shiite population and the communities there have clashed for decades.

The big wave of clashes started on Thursday when two convoys of Shia Muslims were attacked, although they were under police escort.

That day, 43 people were killed and the shooting started.

"The clashes of November 21, 22 and 23 have resulted in 82 killed and 156 injured," said a local official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Among those killed are 16 Sunnis, while another 66 are from the Shiite community," he said.

About 300 families are said to have been displaced these days, as a result of the fierce fighting.

The police have always had difficulty stopping the violence in the Kurram region.

A delegation of the provincial government held talks with the Shiite community on Saturday and are expected to discuss with the other side on Sunday, with the aim of reaching a ceasefire./ Rel
