Views of Beirut after the Israeli attacks

A powerful explosion killed 11 people in central Beirut on Saturday, Lebanon's civil defense said, as Israel presses ahead with its offensive against Iran-backed Hezbollah.

The United States considers Hezbollah a terrorist group, while the European Union only considers its military wing, but not its political wing.

The attack destroyed an eight-story building and caused a large number of casualties, Lebanon's National News Agency said.

In the images broadcasted in the media, at least one building was seen destroyed and many others were severely damaged around.

The agency said that the bombs used by Israel - about four of them - caused craters in the terrain.

This is said to be Israel's fourth attack on downtown Beirut this week.

Israel launched a massive offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon in September of this year, after almost a year of border hostilities between the two sides.

Hezbollah militants have fired rockets at Israel as a sign of solidarity with Hamas - the militant group that rules Gaza - which Israel has been fighting since October 2023.

Hamas is considered a terrorist group by both the US and the European Union.

The war in Gaza has been fueled by attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli soil, killing 1,200 people and taking around 240 hostages.

As a result of the Israeli offensive in Gaza, over 42,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The international factor has failed to achieve a ceasefire for the conflicts./ REL
