Ukraine lost 40% of the land it controlled in Russian Kursk, a source says

Ukraine has lost more than 40 percent of the territory in Russia's Kursk region, control of which it gained through a surprise incursion in August, a source within the Ukrainian military has said.

According to this source, Russia has committed about 59,000 military troops to the Kursk region since the Ukrainian incursion, which caught Moscow unprepared two and a half years after the start of the war in Ukraine.

"In the beginning we had control of 1,376 square kilometers, now this territory is naturally smaller. The enemy is increasing counterattacks," said this source.

"Now we control somewhere around 800 square kilometers. We will hold this territory as long as it is militarily appropriate."

The Kursk offensive marked the first time a foreign force had launched a land invasion of Russia since World War II.

With the incursion in Kursk, Kiev aimed to stop Russian attacks in the eastern and northeastern regions of Ukraine, to prevent the advance of the Russian army in Ukraine, but also to increase the bargaining power in future peace negotiations.

However, Russian forces are reported to be advancing in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.

The source within the Ukrainian army has said that about 11,000 North Korean soldiers have arrived in the Kursk region to support Russia, although some of them are still in the training phase.

Moscow has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of North Korean soldiers in Kursk.

The West has sharply criticized the positioning of North Korean forces alongside Russian soldiers in the war against Ukraine and has warned that they could be targeted in attacks.

Western leaders are concerned about the deepening of cooperation between Russia and North Korea in other areas as well.

The two countries are under strict Western sanctions. Russia for launching the war in Ukraine in February 2022, while North Korea for its missile and nuclear weapons program./REL
