Basel residents approve public funding for Eurovision

The people of Basel voted on Sunday to approve the public financing of the Eurovision song festival that will be held in their city in 2025.

Preliminary results suggest that most residents have agreed to a loan of 40 million euros to finance the 69th edition of the festival in May next year.

The funds will be used to organize the festival, including the accommodation of the participants, but also for the expansion of local public transport.

Among the voters, 66.4 percent of them voted in favor of receiving the loan.

Across the state, residents voted on a variety of issues, including whether to widen highways, as well as proposals for health and housing schemes.

In Zurich, residents will vote on whether to allow a gender marking of names in official publications.

These markings - with the symbol * - have started to be used in the German language, in order to make names more inclusive for both genders.

This practice is being rejected by the conservatives and some other parties in Switzerland, who are demanding a referendum to stop this practice.

Basel will be the host of the song festival, after the victory it secured in this year's edition with the song The Code by Nemo./ Rel
