Erdogan aims to increase trade with Russia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that he wants to expand commercial cooperation between Ankara and Moscow.

"President Erdogan has stated that he aims to increase cooperation between Turkey and Russia in several directions, including the expansion of trade volume," the Turkish Presidency said in a statement.

Although it has been quick to condemn Russia's war in Ukraine, Turkey maintains a neutral stance on the war, and has not followed the West's policies of imposing sanctions against Moscow.

Erdogan has justified the policy because of Turkey's dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Five Turkish companies have been targeted by US sanctions in September 2023 for supplying equipment to several Russian companies in the field of defense.

In a letter sent in August 2022, the US Treasury Department warned Turkish companies of "increasing risk" as "Russia attempts to exploit" Turkey to "escape sanctions".

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
