Romania, the first round of presidential elections is held

Romania is holding its first round of presidential elections that could give hard-right politician George Simion hope of victory, while the high cost of living and the country's support for Ukraine are top-of-mind issues among voters. .

13 candidates are competing for the position of president of the European Union and NATO member country. The two main candidates are expected to face off in a runoff on December 8.

Romanian citizens living abroad have been able to vote since Friday.

In the runoff could be George Simion, the leader of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, a far-right party, and the current Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, who is supported by Romania's largest party, the Social Democratic Party.

The president has a 5-year mandate and has decision-making power in areas related to national security, foreign policy and the appointment of judges.
