Trump nominates Brooke Rollins to head the Department of Agriculture

President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Brooke Rollins to head the Department of Agriculture. Ms. Rollins heads the organization "America First Policy Institute"

"As Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke will lead efforts to protect America's farmers, who are truly the backbone of our country," Trump said in a statement.

If confirmed by the Senate, Ms. Rollins will lead a 100,000-employee agency that has offices in every county in the United States and will cover a wide range of issues, such as food security, rural development, agricultural research and trade, among others.

The agency's budget for 2024 was $437.2 billion.

The candidate's agenda will affect Americans' food diets and spending on food. Agriculture Department officials negotiate trade deals, make dietary recommendations, inspect meat products, fight wildfires and support Internet access for rural areas, among other activities.

"Brooke is committed to America's farmers, protecting the nation's food security, and revitalizing small towns dependent on agriculture," Mr. Trump's statement said.

The America First Policy Institute is a right-leaning organization that has worked closely with Mr. Trump's campaign to help shape policies for his incoming administration. Ms. Rollins led the Domestic Policy Council during Mr. Trump's first term.

At the head of the Department of Agriculture, Mrs. Rollins will lead the new negotiations next year for the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement./ Voa
