At least 43 injured by a powerful explosion in a Russian factory

Local officials in Russia said at least 43 people were injured in an explosion at an optical factory in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 kilometers from Moscow, on August 9.

Six of the injured are in intensive care due to severe burns and head injuries, according to the city administration. Some of the 43 people admitted to a regional hospital received injuries from metal fragments.

Independent Telegram channel Baza shared a video showing a large cloud of smoke and identified the stricken building as the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Factory, which produces night vision and other optical equipment for the military.

Russian officials confirmed this later.

Russia's TASS news agency quoted emergency services as denying reports on social media that the explosion was caused by a drone attack.

The speculation was fueled by drone attacks in Moscow in recent months, which Moscow has blamed on Kiev, as well as Russian reports that it had foiled two new drone attacks near Moscow on the night of August 8.

TASS reported that the explosion occurred at the site where pyrotechnics were being kept and that a large warehouse was destroyed.

An unexpected fire had damaged the same Zagorsk factory in June 2022./REL
