Typhoon Bavi hits China, nearly two million residents evacuated

Typhoon Bavi has hit China, becoming the second typhoon to hit the country in a week. The storm first hit the coast in the city of Taizhou on Saturday evening, before making landfall a second time in Wenzhou, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Chinese authorities have evacuated more than 1.7 million residents in Zhejiang province, while thousands more have fled from danger zones in neighboring provinces. In Zhejiang, classes, outdoor activities and work have been suspended, while hundreds of flights and dozens of rail lines have been canceled.

Although Bavi has weakened to a strong tropical storm, meteorologists warn that the risk remains high due to intense rainfall, which could cause flooding and landslides in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.

Before reaching China, the typhoon passed over the southern islands of Japan and near Taiwan, causing power outages, flight cancellations and mass evacuations. In the Philippines, rains associated with the storm triggered landslides, killing at least 17 people.

Meanwhile, parts of southern China continue to deal with the aftermath of Typhoon Maysak, which hit the country earlier this week, leaving at least 39 dead and causing extensive damage to agriculture and infrastructure./ CNA
