Vu?i? opposes the conviction of Patriarch Porfirije by a Slovenian court

Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? has challenged the decision of a court in Slovenia against the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), Porfirije, which sentenced him to four months in prison on probation.

The Serbian Orthodox Church said on Friday that the court's decision is "scandalous," without specifying what offense the Serbian patriarch had been convicted of.

Slovenian public broadcaster, Radiotelevision of Slovenia, reported in March that the Ljubljana Basic Prosecutor's Office had filed an indictment against the SOC patriarch for mistreatment of a priest in the workplace.

Vu?i? said that Patriarch Porfirije in Slovenia has been convicted "for something he never did," but that this, according to him, "shows the attitude towards the Serbian Orthodox Church as a pillar of Serbian society," Beta agency reported.

"In my opinion, Patriarch Porfirije can also be proud of this decision, because it shows how important he is to the Serbian people and what all those who do not love the Serbian people think of him," Vu?i? said during a visit to the construction works of a road segment near Leskovac.

Vu?i? added that this "could give the Serbian patriarch the halo of a victim and martyr, as well as even greater strength from the people he serves so faithfully."

Porfirije was at the head of the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana of the Serbian Orthodox Church from 2014 to 2021, when he was elected patriarch. /REL
