The fate of Mojtaba Khamenei has been a mystery to Iranians and the rest of the world since his appointment as supreme leader a week after the attack that killed his father in late February.

His absence from the main funeral ceremonies for former leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was so long that there was not even a written message, leaving people to speculate about his plans for Iran at a turbulent time in the Islamic Republic's 47-year history.

Appointed with the support of the powerful Revolutionary Guard, he suffered facial disfigurement and other injuries in the attack, senior sources said. They said he was making decisions but was not yet well enough to appear in public.

Foreign media write that as his name is being "revived" these days by his father's funeral ceremony, the role and health of Mojtaba Khamenei are a matter of critical and growing concern for Iranians.

There had been speculation that Mojtaba Khamenei would eventually appear, if not in person, then with a recorded message or even new photos, when his father was finally buried in the golden dome.

Senior Iranian sources have attributed the lack of any new images or audio recordings since his appointment on March 8 to health and security concerns.
