US Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away

Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has died after a brief and unexpected illness, his office confirmed on Saturday evening.

"Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and requests privacy during this extremely difficult time," the family said in a statement.

Lindsey Graham, elected to the United States Senate in 2002, was one of Washington's most influential figures in defense and foreign policy. He was also a key ally of US President Donald Trump and a powerful voice on national security issues.

Graham has also served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, playing an important role in political decision-making in the US.

Before his death, the senator had visited Kiev, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He was a strong supporter of American aid to Ukraine and had warned that weakening support for Kiev could have wide international consequences.
