Defense requests conditional release of Hashim Thaçi/ Offers a guarantee

The defense of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has filed a request with the Special Court in The Hague for his provisional release, arguing that there are no longer any grounds to justify his continued detention.

Media in Kosovo write that Thaçi's lawyers have offered a financial guarantee of 50 thousand euros to support the request for conditional release.

''The Defence of Mr. Hashim Thaçi (“Defence”) hereby presents its arguments in the context of the review of detention, in accordance with Article 41(6) and (10) of the Law,¹ Rules 56 and 57 of the Rules,² and the order of the Single Trial Judge (“GVG”).³ The Defence requests that the GVG order the provisional release of Mr. Thaçi, inter alia, on the grounds that he does not pose a flight risk, particularly taking into account the financial guarantee of 50,000 euros offered to secure his release,? and that the continuation of his detention is no longer reasonable or proportionate'', the request states, among other things.

The request comes as the trial against Thaçi and other former KLA leaders in the case for war crimes and crimes against humanity has entered its final phase and the Specialist Chambers have set September 16, 2026 as the date for the announcement of the first-instance verdict.

Thaçi has been in custody in The Hague since November 2020, after the indictment against him was confirmed. /CNA
