A place for women, by women. This is what Umoja, a village in Samburu County, northern Kenya, stands for. It looks a lot like other tribal settlements, with pastures and huts all around, except for one thing.

There are no men.

Founded in 1990 as a sanctuary for Samburu women escaping gender-based violence, Umoja is home to women of all ages. Men are denied entry to create a safe space for girls and women who are survivors of violence and sexual abuse, expelled from their families, and those escaping child marriage or female genital mutilation (FGM). .

The first members of Umoja were from remote Samburu villages scattered across the Rift Valley. Exact numbers fade, but at most, this self-sustaining village has been home to about 50 families of women and their children and continues to educate its residents on women's rights and gender-based violence. . Every boy is allowed to live in the village until he turns 18.

The lifestyle of those who live there is modest, with the women working to provide income for food and educational resources for the village children and some of the women themselves. Located about a kilometer away from Umoja is a campsite where many tourists stay when they visit the region to explore the famous Maasai Mara game reserve. Tourists who wish to visit Umoja pay a small entrance fee and can purchase elaborate beaded ornaments and other handicrafts handmade by Samburu women./CNA.al
