The US says there are signs Russia will return to talks on the grain deal

The United States has been told that Russia is ready to return to talks on the agreement allowing the safe export of Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea.

But, "we still haven't seen any evidence of that," the US envoy to the United Nations said on August 1.

Russia withdrew from the grain deal on July 17.

The US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that if Russia wants its artificial fertilizers to reach world markets and to have ease in transactions for agricultural products "they have to go back to this agreement".

"We have seen indications that they may be interested in returning to discussions. Therefore, we have to wait to see if this will happen," she said without giving more details.

Russia's withdrawal from the deal has made it impossible for Ukraine - a global grain producer - to safely export agricultural products from ports on the Black Sea as Russia's occupation of Ukraine continues.

Last year, following the launch of the invasion of Ukraine, the UN and Turkey brokered a grain export deal.

Since Russia's withdrawal from the agreement, Ukraine is exporting its products by land routes to the European Union, but also via alternative routes through the Danube River./REL
