Iran closes government offices, banks and schools/ Cause, scorching heat

Iran has declared a two-day nationwide holiday due to extremely high temperatures, state media announced on Tuesday.

Iran's government spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi said the decision to close government offices, banks and schools on Thursday and Wednesday came after the Health Ministry warned of a possible increase in cases of heat exhaustion due to of the high temperatures that have gripped the country, the IRNA news agency reported.

In recent days, cities and towns in Iran experienced temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius.

In the capital Tehran, temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

The Meteorological Office has predicted that the temperature in Tehran in the next three days will be 39 degrees Celsius.

Ahvaz, the capital of the country's oil-rich southwestern province, experienced the highest temperatures on Tuesday at 50 degrees Celsius.

In 2022, Iran recorded the highest temperature in Ahvaz, 53 degrees Celsius.

Probably the hottest day in modern history on earth was July 4, when the global average temperature reached 17.18 degrees Celsius. This was largely blamed on climate change and El Niño.

The highest air temperature on earth was 56.7 degrees Celsius, recorded on July 10, 1913, in Death Valley in the United States./ REL
