Thousands of believers continue to line up in a very long line since the early hours of the morning to visit the tomb of Pope Francis at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

People gathered from the early hours at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome to pray and pay their respects to Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday.

The flow of believers has continued uninterrupted since 7 a.m., but many of them had been queuing outside since dawn.

Several Eucharistic celebrations were held in the side chapels of the basilica after its opening hours, with a Mass taking place at 10 a.m. at the central altar.

Because of the long line, the faithful were asked to pause in front of the late pope's tomb in prayer for no more than a few seconds each.

Pope Francis' tomb is simple, bathed in warm light and adorned only with a carving of the late Pope's pectoral cross. Only "Franciscus," the late Pope's Latin name, is carved into the pale marble, with a single white rose placed next to it.

Visits are allowed throughout the 9-day period of official mourning, after which a conclave will be held to elect the next head of the Catholic Church. /CNA
