"Example in keeping the faith burning"/ Pope Leo proclaims 7 new

Pope Leo XIV declared seven new saints this Sunday, during the weekly Mass at the Vatican.

Bells rang out in St. Peter's Square for the ceremony, in which he canonized former priest-cultist Bartolo Longo, along with a lay catechist from Papua New Guinea, an archbishop killed in the Armenian genocide, a Venezuelan doctor of the poor, and three nuns who dedicated their lives to the poor and sick.

Among them are Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan, Peter To Rot, Vincenza Maria Poloni, Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martínez, Maria Troncatti, José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros and Bartolo Longo.

"Today we have before us seven witnesses, the new Saints, who, by the grace of God, kept the lamp of faith burning. May their intercession help us in our trials and may their example inspire us in our common call to holiness," said Pope Leo.

The canonization of these saints will be the second for the American-born pope since he became leader of the Catholic Church on May 8.

Last month, the Pope declared Italian saints Carlo Acutis, a teenager dubbed the "Influencer of God" who spread the faith online before dying at the age of 15 in 2006, and Pier Giorgio Frassati, considered a model of charity, who died in 1925 at the age of 24. /CNA
