Israel returns bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza

Israel returned the bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza on October 18, bringing the total number of dead bodies to 135, the Health Ministry in the Palestinian enclave said.

Under the ceasefire agreement, brokered by US President Donald Trump, Israel must hand over the bodies of 15 Palestinians for every dead Israeli body handed over by Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.

On Friday, Hamas handed over the body of another Israeli hostage.

Since the ceasefire began, Hamas has handed over the bodies of nine Israeli hostages and one of a Nepalese student.

The Gaza Health Ministry said some of the bodies returned on Saturday had signs of "abuse, beatings and handcuffing."

This ministry had made similar claims when it had previously accepted Palestinian bodies.

The Israeli military has described these claims as "false Hamas propaganda."

"Furthermore, all the bodies surrendered are those of fighters inside the Gaza Strip," the Israeli military said earlier.

On October 13, Hamas released all 20 live Israeli hostages and began handing over the bodies of the dead hostages. In exchange, that same day, Israel released nearly 2,000 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

The release of the hostages and the ceasefire in Gaza are part of the first phase of the 20-point plan presented by President Trump for peace in the Palestinian enclave.

On October 14, Trump said that the second phase of his plan had begun. The peace plan calls for the disarmament of Hamas – a demand that Israel had previously made but that the radical Palestinian group had rejected.

The Gaza war began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 others. As a result of Israel's retaliatory offensive, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the enclave's Health Ministry.

The war has devastated large parts of Gaza and the territory's 2 million residents are facing a deep humanitarian crisis./REL
