Germany ready to approve sale of Eurofighter jets to Turkey
Johann Wadephul

The German government is reportedly ready to approve the sale of Eurofighter jets to Ankara. According to reports, Berlin has decided to give a positive response to Turkey's preliminary request, opening official negotiations for the delivery of the aircraft.

Technical details and negotiating points for the Eurofighter procurement are a major topic of discussion during German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul's visit to Ankara today. In an interview, Wadephul stressed that it is in the interest of his country and NATO for Turkey to receive these fighter jets.

“Germany and Turkey face major challenges in strengthening NATO’s defense capability in Europe. We have decided that Turkey, as an ally, can strengthen its deterrent power with the help of Eurofighters. This is in our interest, as Turkey is a key strategic partner for us within the Alliance. However, negotiations on the details are still ongoing,” the German minister said, among other things.

The Eurofighter Typhoon program is the most advanced aviation cooperation in Europe and is being developed jointly by Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain. The sale to a third country requires the approval of all four states. Although Turkey had received positive signals from London and Madrid as early as 2022, Berlin’s opposition has so far been the biggest obstacle to concluding the deal.

Ankara plans to initially purchase 24 Eurofighter aircraft, with the aim of increasing the number to 40 aircraft in a second phase. The total value of the deal, including training, technical support, spare parts and software licenses, is estimated at around $6 billion.

Each aircraft costs around $120 million, while part of the production and maintenance is planned to be carried out in Turkey, strengthening the domestic defense systems industry. Most of the fighter jets are expected to come from the United Kingdom and Spain, countries that have already declared their intention to actively support the program. /CNA
