Kosovo Security Force: Some of our members mistakenly entered the north with

The Kosovo Security Force confirmed on Thursday that its members with several vehicles mistakenly entered the north of the country after confusing the direction of movement.

The KSF – which must obtain permission from the NATO mission in Kosovo to move into this part of the country – said the incident occurred at around 10:30 on Thursday, during the movement of the convoy from Istog to the KSF barracks in Mitrovica.

Earlier, the deputy director of the Kosovo Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, told Radio Free Europe that members of the KSF "lost their way, the GPS navigation took them wrongly to the north."

According to him, they left the north after the Kosovo Police noticed them and talked to them.

Videos were published on social media showing several KSF trucks passing along a road in the city of North Mitrovica - one of four municipalities in the north that are inhabited by a Serb majority.

Elshani told Radio Free Europe that according to police information, the KSF vehicles were parked at a gas station for "five to ten minutes." Then, escorted by police, the KSF left the north via the "fastest route," passing by a bus station at a place known as Shkëmbi i Dudas.

Serbia: This is a violation of NATO guarantees

Regarding this event, the Office for Kosovo in the Serbian Government has asked the international community to react, saying that it is a "direct violation of strong NATO guarantees."

Although the Kosovo Police have said that this is a mistake, the Office for Kosovo in the Serbian Government claimed that the Kosovo authorities, led by the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, "have sent two trucks and four military vehicles, KSF Humvees" to the north, a day after the visit to Kosovo of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who called for a reduction in tensions in the country.

Meanwhile, the Serbian List, the largest Serb party in Kosovo that has the support of Belgrade, said that the KSF's move to North Mitrovica "has caused concern among the Serbian people and increased tensions."

"This action constitutes a dangerous and deliberate provocation, aimed at destabilizing the situation on the ground and causing fear and insecurity among the Serbian people," the statement said.

The Serbian List asked KFOR for a greater presence in northern Kosovo "to prevent new attempts at unilateral actions and to protect the peace and security of all citizens."

"The Serbian List warns that such actions are unacceptable and could have serious consequences for the stability of the region ," the party said.

The presence of the KSF in the north of the country is only possible with the prior consent of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, based on the 2013 commitment by the Government of Kosovo to NATO.

This commitment, given through a letter from former Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi to the then NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, remains in force today, despite changes in the KSF's mandate.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has asked KFOR whether it is aware that the KSF has remained in the north.

Otherwise, for the last time, with the consent of KFOR, the KSF was in the north on July 29 of this year, in an operation when it found the body of an operative who had jumped from a bridge into Lake Ujman.

The KSF is in the process of transforming itself into an army, following approved legal changes. This process is expected to be completed in 2028. /REL
