Stopping drug and migrant trafficking/ Trump authorizes CIA to operate in

US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he has authorized the CIA to operate inside Venezuela to stop the illegal flow of migrants and drugs from the South American nation.

The president briefed CIA authorities around the same time he signed a secret directive ordering the military to begin strikes against drug cartels in Latin America earlier this summer. He tied the authorization to his efforts to crack down on drug smuggling.

"We have a lot of drugs coming from Venezuela and a lot of Venezuelan drugs coming by sea, but we're going to stop them by land as well," Trump said in the Oval Office.

Without expressing that his goal was to remove Maduro from power, Trump said he sensed that Venezuela's leaders were feeling pressure.

"I think Venezuela is feeling the pressure. But I think many other countries are feeling the pressure too. We are not going to let this country, our country, be destroyed because other people want to leave, as you say, the worst of them," he said.

The comments came a day after Trump announced that the US military had carried out another attack on a ship suspected of smuggling drugs off the coast of Venezuela, killing six people on board. It marked at least the fifth time the US has reported such an attack, escalating tensions with Maduro, who has signaled he is preparing to declare a state of emergency to protect his country in the event of an attack by the US military. /CNA
