The latest data shows a significant increase in marriages during the month of August and a noticeable decrease in divorces. The number of births has also decreased.

The number of marriages in Kosovo increased significantly during August of this year, while the number of divorces has decreased significantly.

According to data from the Kosovo Agency of Statistics, 1,972 marriages were registered in August, which represents an increase of 59.5 percent compared to July, when 1,236 marriages were registered.

Meanwhile, the number of divorces has dropped by 45.2 percent. In August, 97 divorce cases were registered, compared to 177 cases in July.

The published data also shows movements in the number of births and deaths.

In August, 2,516 births were registered, a decrease of 6.4 percent compared to the previous month. Of these births, 1,284 were male and 1,232 female.

On the other hand, the number of deaths has increased. During August, 914 deaths were recorded, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to July, when 876 cases were recorded. Of these, 515 were males and 399 were females.

According to the latest World Bank data for 2024, Kosovo ranks first in the world in terms of population shrinkage rate, with a decrease of -9.7 percent.

This result places Kosovo at the top of the list of countries with the largest demographic decline globally, a figure that experts describe as alarming for the future of the country's social and economic development.

While the world population has recorded an average growth of 1 percent, Kosovo is facing the opposite trend, mainly due to massive emigration to European countries, in search of better living and employment opportunities.

Despite the efforts of institutions to curb the departure of citizens and to promote population growth through subsidies and incentive policies, data shows that the country is facing a deep demographic crisis.

During the month of August 2025, a total of 914 deaths were registered (inside and outside Kosovo). Of the total deaths registered, 515 were male and 399 were female. Compared to July 2025, 4.3% more deaths were registered in August./ Monitor
