Fire at a garment factory in Bangladesh kills 16 people

At least 16 people have died after a massive fire broke out at a garment factory in Bangladesh, with officials warning the death toll could rise.

The fire, which broke out at the factory around noon, was extinguished after three hours. Fire service director Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury told local media that the victims may have died from inhaling highly toxic gas.

Large fires are common in densely populated Bangladesh, often due to lax safety standards and poor infrastructure. Hundreds of people have lost their lives in fires in recent years.

In 2021, a fire at a food and beverage factory left at least 52 dead and 20 injured. An investigation later found that the factory was built illegally and had no emergency exits. In 2019, a fire that quickly swept through a historic neighborhood in Dhaka killed at least 78 people.

The country's deadliest industrial accident to date occurred in 2013, when an eight-story commercial building collapsed due to a structural defect, killing more than 1,100 people. /CNA
