Creation of the new government/ Kurti: We have not yet started discussions, due

The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that he has not yet started discussions with other parties regarding the formation of the new government of Kosovo.

On October 10, Kurti, leader of the Vetevendosje Movement, was mandated by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, to form the new executive.

"Too much work these days, analysis of results from the centers. We need to see the contributions that the campaigns have had in the municipalities with the results we have achieved, so that we can start the campaign for the runoffs as soon as possible. Therefore, yesterday and today I have not yet managed to develop those communications. But, we are making a plan for this as well. We have more than ten days," Kurti told the media on October 14 when asked if he had started discussions with political entities about central government.

A day ago, Kurti announced that discussions on the new Kosovo government will begin this week.

Kurti's party, the Vetevendosje Movement, won the most votes in the February 9 parliamentary elections, but not enough to form its own new leadership.

Kurti has until October 26 to present the new executive to the Assembly. His election requires 61 votes in the 120-seat Assembly.

"Kosovo needs another mandate for our government, it needs a new mandate for our government. We need a new mandate in line with the results of February 9 this year ," Kurti declared during a press conference on October 13.

He did not want to give details about which parties he might discuss a possible coalition with.

The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, stated a few days ago that the LVV could discuss with the Democratic League of Kosovo about a possible coalition, as the Social Democratic Initiative has not been interested in being included in the government.

She has ruled out any possible coalition with the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Serbian List – the largest Serb party in Kosovo, which enjoys the support of Belgrade.

Political insiders told Radio Free Europe that the competition between political parties for the second round of local elections – to be held on November 9 – could affect negotiations for the formation of the new executive.

If LVV fails to secure the support of 61 MPs for the new cabinet by October 26, then President Osmani is obliged to invite the political parties to consultations once again within 10 days, and to decide, at her discretion, on the new candidate, if she proves to her that she has the numbers to form the government.

The next prime minister should also have 15 days to present the composition of the government cabinet to the Assembly.

If the government is not formed even after 40 days, the president must announce the decree for new elections, which must be held forty days from the announcement of the decision./REL
