"It's limping home"/ Rutte mocks Russian submarine, Kremlin

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking in Slovenia, mocked Russia over the malfunction of a submarine that surfaced off the coast of France a few days ago. Rutte said the Russian submarine was returning home "snorting".

"Now, in fact, there is hardly any Russian naval presence left in the Mediterranean," Rutte said. "There is a lone, wrecked Russian submarine limping home from patrol."

"What a change from Tom Clancy's 1984 novel, 'The Hunt for Red October.' Today, it looks more like the hunt for the nearest mechanic ," he added.

Yesterday, the Russian Black Sea Fleet denied reports of an emergency surfacing, claiming that the submarine was simply carrying out a planned transit after completing operations in the Mediterranean.

The Novorossiysk, a diesel-electric submarine armed with long-range Kalibr cruise missiles, entered service in 2014 as part of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. According to Dutch media reports, the submarine suffered a fuel leak that forced it to surface near France. Unable to dock in Black Sea or Syrian ports, it was diverted to northern waters for repairs under NATO supervision. /CNA
