Israel decides to reopen Rafah crossing/Abandons measures against Hamas

Israel has decided to reopen the Rafah crossing, which connects the Gaza Strip with Egypt, and allow the transfer of humanitarian aid to the enclave.

The announcement comes after Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – handed over the mortal remains of the four hostages, Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported on October 15.

The hostage release was preceded by a warning from Israel that it would halve the number of aid trucks allowed into Gaza, but this measure was canceled after the handover of the bodies of the four dead hostages.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump called on Hamas to release the dead hostages, saying the work to stop the war is not over.

Hamas released 20 live Israeli hostages on October 13, while Israel released nearly 2,000 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. On the same day, the remains of four hostages were handed over to Israeli authorities.

The release of the hostages and the ceasefire in Gaza are part of the first phase of the 20-point plan presented by President Trump for peace in the Palestinian enclave.

On October 14, Trump said that the second phase of his plan had begun. The peace plan calls for the disarmament of Hamas – a demand that Israel had previously made but that the radical Palestinian group had rejected.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 others. As a result of Israel's retaliatory offensive, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the enclave's Health Ministry. The war has devastated large parts of Gaza and the territory's 2 million residents are facing a deep humanitarian crisis./REL
