Police operation in Zvecan and Zubin Potok

Police investigators are conducting raids in the municipalities of Zvecan and Zubin Potok on October 19, authorities announced.

According to the announcement of the Kosovo Special Prosecution, which has filed a request with the court for this operation, raids are being carried out in these two municipalities on suspicion of committing criminal offenses: "endangering United Nations personnel or personnel in relation to them, aggravated murder and assault on an official person while performing official duty."

The prosecution said that, together with the police, it is conducting the necessary investigations into this case.

"The public will be informed of the details after the operation is completed," the announcement said.

Zvecan and Zubin Potok are two of the four municipalities in northern Kosovo inhabited by a Serb majority. These municipalities have been subject to tensions in recent years, and in 2023, there were protests by local Serbs against the Albanian mayors of the municipalities.

The 2023 protests culminated in clashes between protesters and members of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, in Zvecan on May 29. Dozens of KFOR soldiers and protesters were injured during the clashes. NATO has repeatedly called for those responsible for the violence to face justice.

In September of that same year in Banjska, Zve?an, a group of armed Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police, killing a sergeant.

Kosovo considers this a terrorist attack and blames Serbia for it. Responsibility for the attack has been claimed by Milan Radoicic, former deputy leader of the Serbian List - the main Serb party in Kosovo that enjoys the support of Belgrade.

Kosovo has filed an indictment against him and other suspects in this case, but only three people are on trial as the others are inaccessible to Kosovo authorities.

Kosovo demands that Serbia hand over Radoicic and other Banjska suspects, while the international community demands that they face justice./ REL
