US says Hamas planning attacks on civilians in Gaza

The US State Department says it has "credible reports" that Hamas is planning an immediate attack on civilians in Gaza, which it says would violate the ceasefire agreement.

A statement issued on Saturday said a planned attack against Palestinians would be a direct and grave violation of the ceasefire agreement and would undermine the progress achieved through mediation efforts.

The State Department did not provide further details on the attack and it is unclear what reports it was citing.

The first phase of the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel is currently underway, with all live hostages released and the bodies of the deceased still being returned to Israel. Also as part of the agreement, Israel released 250 Palestinian prisoners in its jails and 1,718 detainees from Gaza.

Washington said it had already informed the other guarantors of the Gaza peace deal, which include Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, and demanded that Hamas support the conclusion of the ceasefire terms.

"If Hamas continues with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and maintain the integrity of the ceasefire," the statement said.

Hamas has not yet commented on the statement. President Donald Trump has previously warned Hamas against killing civilians. He later clarified that he would not send US troops to Gaza.

"If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not in the Agreement, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them," Trump said in a post on Truth Social earlier this week.

So far, 11 of the 28 dead hostages have been returned to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would remain closed until Hamas returns the remaining bodies. The Rafah border crossing is a vital gateway for Palestinians needing medical assistance to leave Gaza, as well as for thousands of others returning. /CNA, translated by BBC
