Allegation of ceasefire violation/ Israeli attacks reported in Gaza

The Israeli military has carried out attacks in Gaza, as Israel blamed Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - for violating a US-brokered ceasefire, Israeli media reported on October 19.

There has been no announcement from the Israeli military yet, and Hamas has not reported any attacks.

Israeli public broadcaster Kan said the air force had carried out strikes in Rafah, south of Gaza. Most Israeli media outlets said it was carrying out airstrikes.

The Israeli military said on Friday that “several terrorists” had opened fire on its soldiers in the Rafah area, but reported no injuries. Later on Friday, the military said it attacked another group of “terrorists” who were approaching troops in Khan Yunis.

The Israeli government and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire, while Israel has said the Rafah crossing, which connects Gaza to Egypt, will remain closed until further notice.

Israel and Hamas have clashed over the return of the bodies of dead hostages. Israel demanded that Hamas fulfill its obligations by handing over the remaining bodies of all 28 hostages.

Hamas has released all 20 live hostages and handed over the remains of 12 dead hostages.

The reported attacks in Gaza come after the US said it had "credible reports" that Hamas was planning an attack on Palestinian civilians. Such an attack, according to Washington, would constitute a violation of the ceasefire, warning the radical Palestinian group that it would take action. Hamas has denied that it is planning such an attack. /REL
