The United States Embassy in Kiev has received information about the possibility of a major airstrike on Wednesday, and as a result will be temporarily closed, the US Department of State for Consular Affairs announced.

"The Embassy will be closed and Embassy employees have been instructed to shelter in place as a precautionary measure," the Department said in a statement published on the website of the US Embassy in Kyiv.

"The US Embassy advises US citizens to be ready for immediate shelter in case any air strikes are notified," she said.

This is not the first time that the American Embassy in Kiev closes its doors due to the risk of airstrikes.

The announcement comes a day after Ukraine used US long-range ATACMS missiles to carry out attacks on Russian soil, using the permission given by the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden on the 1,000th day of the war.

Russia has been warning the West for months that if Washington allows Ukraine to launch US, British and French missiles deep into Russia, then Moscow will consider these NATO member states to be directly involved in the war in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in October that Moscow would respond if Ukraine attacked with US weapons deep inside Russia.

On Tuesday, Putin changed Russia's nuclear doctrine, raising the risk of nuclear attacks at a time when tensions between Russia and the West have reached their highest point in 50 years./REL
