US envoy arrives in Beirut/ Lebanon and Hezbollah accept ceasefire proposal

United States envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut on Tuesday for talks with local officials about a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, Lebanon's state news agency reported.

He arrived hours after Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group, accepted Washington's ceasefire proposal.

Hezbollah, which controls southern Lebanon, has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted its armed wing but not its political party.

His visit is a sign of progress in US-led diplomatic efforts to end the conflict which erupted into full-scale war in late September when Israel launched a major offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Both Lebanon's government and Hezbollah have agreed to the U.S. ceasefire proposal, which was delivered to them in writing last week, and they gave their opinions on its content, Ali Hassan Khail told Reuters on Monday. adviser to the Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon, Nabih Berri.

Israel has yet to comment on the issue.

Hezbollah backed its longtime ally, Berri, to negotiate a cease-fire, but both he and Israel have escalated the war while political efforts have continued.

A diplomat briefed on the talks warned that details still need to be worked out and that could mean delays in reaching a final deal.

Khalil said Israel is trying to negotiate "under fire," referring to its intensification of its bombing of Beirut and southern suburbs controlled by Hezbollah.

"This will not affect our attitude," he said./REL
