Biden: We strongly support Ukraine's sovereignty

The US President, Joe Biden, has again mentioned the US Government's support for Ukraine, as he spoke at the summit of the 20 most industrialized countries in the world (G20) that is being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

However, he did not directly mention the rumored decision to give Ukraine the green light to use long-range missiles.

"We must all work to end the conflicts and crises that are eroding progress towards improving security in the world," Biden said.

He said that "the United States strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine".

"Everyone at this table, according to my conviction, should act the same way," Biden said.

Earlier in the day, the Kremlin accused Biden of seeking to escalate the conflict in Ukraine by lifting restrictions on long-range weapons.

These statements were made after several media reports that Biden has given permission for the Ukrainians to use American weapons more deeply in attacks against Russia.

The White House itself has not commented on these reports.

The developments come after months of lobbying by Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, for Western countries to give Kiev the green light to use the weapons to shoot at targets further away.

The United States, and some NATO countries, have so far set limits on how far the weapons can be used.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in September that Russia could respond with nuclear weapons if conventional missiles are launched at it, and that Moscow considers any attack on it, backed by a nuclear power, to be a joint attack.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ VOA
