Germany to enforce strict knife ban

A new package of security measures tightens rules on carrying weapons in public. With Christmas, the masses increase.

After a deadly knife attack earlier this year, Germany's interior minister, Nancy Faeser, has promised to tighten security at this year's Christmas markets.

With Germany's famous Christmas markets opening in the coming weeks, Germany's interior minister has called on police and local authorities to step up security, including enforcing Germany's new knife ban.

"Breaching the knife ban can be punished with fines of up to 10,000 euros," Minister Nancy Faeser told Bild am Sonntag newspaper this weekend, promising "strict enforcement" and "zero tolerance."

New security measures

The German government passed new security legislation in October in response to a deadly knife attack in the western city of Solingen in August. The suspected Islamist attacker killed three people and wounded eight others.

The new package of security measures tightened the rules on carrying weapons in public spaces in Germany and expressly banned the carrying of knives at festivals, sporting events, markets, fairs and other large events.

"Police will be present in many places to ensure security," Faeser said.

There has already been one injury at this year's Christmas markets in Germany, although not related to any security breach.

In Munich earlier this week, a 34-year-old acrobat dressed as Santa Claus inexplicably crashed into a parked van and seriously injured his leg./ DW
