Israel attacks Beirut/Hezbollah Israeli military bases

The Israeli military said it carried out airstrikes in Beirut on November 17 and struck targets of Hezbollah, the militant group and political party that controls most of southern Lebanon.

The Israeli strikes in Beirut came hours after Iran-backed Hezbollah said it attacked Israeli military bases around the city of Haifa.

Plumes of smoke were seen in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, after the Israeli army ordered the evacuation of residents from three areas.

Further south, overnight Israel carried out air and artillery strikes that hit the town of Kiam, about 6 kilometers from the border, Lebanon's National News Agency reported Sunday morning.

The bombings came after the Israeli military reported a "heavy rocket barrage" in Haifa late Saturday, saying a synagogue was hit and two civilians were wounded.

Israel has intensified airstrikes in Lebanon since Sept. 23 and has since launched a ground offensive, after almost a year of border fire between it and Hezbollah since the Gaza war broke out.

Hezbollah is a terrorist group declared by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted the military wing, but not the political group of the group. The Hezbollah party has seats in the Lebanese Parliament.

The southern suburbs of Beirut have been facing repeated Israeli attacks for several days, as this area is considered a stronghold of Hezbollah.

On Saturday, the Israeli military said it attacked "a weapons depot" and a "command center" of Hezbollah.

The Israeli military also said Hezbollah fired about 80 shells into Israel on Saturday.

Lebanese authorities say more than 3,452 people have been killed since October last year and most of the casualties have been recorded since September this year. Meanwhile, Israel has reported 48 killed during the fighting with Hezbollah./ REL
