Protests in Novi Sad and Belgrade, after the deadly incident at the railway

Residents of the northern Serbian town of Novi Sad stopped traffic on Friday and stood in silence for 14 minutes to commemorate the victims of an incident at a railway station two weeks ago. They also demanded accountability for the tragedy.

Dozens of activists blocked a crossroad in front of the city's central railway station, where on November 1 its outer roof suddenly collapsed, killing 14 people and injuring three others.

Many in Serbia said the accident was the result of massive corruption, which they said had caused the delay in renovating the station building.

The 60-year-old structure was renovated twice in recent years and inaugurated by top Serbian officials.

Authorities have promised a full investigation and the Serbian government's construction minister has resigned. However, no arrests have been made in the case. Critics accuse the populist authorities of trying to avoid responsibility.

Thousands have taken part in protests in both Novi Sad and Belgrade over the past two weeks.

Many in Serbia do not believe there will be any punishment for the tragedy, because the populist government has strong control over both the police and the judiciary.

Opposition lawmakers in Belgrade also joined the silent protest on Friday, blocking traffic for 14 minutes in front of the parliament building in the capital.
