Donald Trump nominates Senator Rubio as Secretary of State

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he has nominated Republican Senator Marco Rubio for the post of Secretary of State in his new administration.

" He will be a strong advocate for our nation, a true friend to our allies and a fearless fighter who will never back down from our adversaries ," Trump said in a statement.

Conservative lawmaker Marco Rubio is known for his strong stances on China, Cuba and Iran and was one of the candidates Mr Trump was considering for the vice-presidential post, before finally settling on Senator JD Vance.

Mr. Rubio is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He has pushed for a tougher stance against China by targeting the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok. He and other lawmakers say Beijing can provide access to user data whenever it wants.
