Elon Musk criticizes judges in Italy for blocking the migrant agreement with
Billionaire Elon Musk

Billionaire Elon Musk on Tuesday became part of the heated debate about the Italian government's immigration policy, commenting on judges' decisions that immigrants from other countries should not be sent to Albania. His comments prompted criticism from jurists and the country's opposition.

Italian judges on Monday rejected the detention of a second group of migrants who were sent to camps in Albania, which are managed by Italy, and referred the case to the European Court of Justice.

"These judges need to go ," commented Mr. Musk, the richest man in the world who played an important role in Mr. Trump's re-election as president of the United States. He made these comments on his X platform.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the "Lega" party, a far-right anti-immigration party, responded in English: "Elon Musk is right."

But the center-left Democratic Party called the comment an "unacceptable intervention."

Ernesto Carbone, who is a member of the Supreme Council of Justice, criticized Mr Musk as one of the "new oligarchs" who aim to "control world politics and who pose a danger to democracy".

The National Association of Italian Lawyers also expressed its "surprise" at the tech mogul's intervention.

" The issue is not simply the independence of the judiciary, but the sovereignty of the Italian state ", said the vice president of the association Alessandra Maddalena.

A court in Rome asked European Union judges on Monday to review Albania's detention of migrants caught at sea. By referring the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union, the decision again hinders the right-wing Italian government's attempt to implement its plan on illegal immigration.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed the agreement for the construction of migrant camps in Albania, where some of the migrants caught in the Mediterranean are being sent. They must be held in these camps while their asylum claims are processed.

A group of migrants from Egypt and Bangladesh were sent to Albania after being caught at sea last week. Initially there were eight of them, but one was transferred to Italy for health reasons.

Judges dealt the first blow to the plan last month, ruling that the first group of asylum seekers sent to Albania had to be returned to Italy. The decision was made due to concerns over their legal status, following a ruling by the EU Court of Justice on the matter.

The migrants expected to be sent to Albania are men who come from a list of countries that Italy has classified as safe, meaning their asylum claims have little chance of being accepted and they can be quickly repatriated.

But in their first ruling, the judges said this was against a recent ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which ruled that a country outside the European bloc cannot be declared safe unless it has the entire territory of his without risks.

The Italian news agency Ansa announced that after the decision of the Rome court, the migrants will leave the detention center and be transferred to Italy and will arrive at the southern port of Brindisi.

The case has fueled a bitter clash between the government and judges in recent weeks. The justice minister accused the court of failing to apply EU law, while the judges said they were simply applying the law.

The government cabinet last month updated the legal status of the list of safe places, raising its importance from a ministerial decree to a legal act. The government believed that this would make it more difficult for the courts to challenge the validity of the decision./ VOA
