An attack by Houthi rebels caused several explosions near a merchant ship traveling through the Red Sea on November 12, although no damage to the ship was immediately reported, Western authorities said. Yemeni rebels then claimed to have attacked US warships.
The attack comes as the rebels continue their attacks on ships passing through this important trade route. Their attacks began a year ago, after the war between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in Gaza. Israel is also conducting a ground offensive in Lebanon.
The Houthi rebels have insisted that they will continue their attacks as long as the wars in the Middle East continue.
Meanwhile, a panel of United Nations experts now claims that as a result of the rebel attacks, traders could face being asked to pay millions of dollars a month to pass safely through the area.
The ship, which traveled in the southern Red Sea, about 130 kilometers from the rebel-held port of Hodeidah, reported that it had been attacked, the UK Naval Maritime Center said.
No injuries were reported on board the ship after the explosions and the ship continued its journey.
The Houthi rebels' spokesman, Yahya Saree, claimed they attacked two US warships in the Red Sea with ballistic missiles and drones. It is still unclear whether this claim is related to the report made by British authorities, but similar incidents of rebel attacks on other ships have occurred earlier.
Houthi rebels have targeted more than 90 commercial vessels with missiles and drones since the war in Gaza began in October last year. They have sunk two ships and killed four sailors.
The rebels say they are targeting ships linked to Israel, the US or the UK, saying their attacks are aimed at ending Israel's military campaign in Gaza. However, many of the attacked ships were not related to these countries or the conflict./REL
