Ukrainian commander: Russia is trying to regain territory in Kursk

Russia is massing tens of thousands of troops in Kursk, where it is trying to regain control of territory lost to Ukrainian forces after Kiev launched an offensive in the Russian region this summer.

This is what the commander of the forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskiy, said on November 11.

"Following the orders of their military leadership, they are trying to displace our troops and advance deep into the territory we control," Syrskiy wrote on social media, adding that "if it weren't for the resistance of our soldiers, these tens of thousands of enemies, from thousands of Russian units, would attack our positions".

Ukrainian forces in August launched an offensive in Kursk, which borders Ukraine, taking control of several settlements and strengthening their positions. This was the first time Ukraine carried out such an attack on Russian territory since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

According to the Ukrainian military, its forces have taken control of about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory since August, while Moscow has admitted that 28 of its settlements are under Ukrainian control.

On November 9, Syrskiy confirmed reports that thousands of North Korean soldiers have massed alongside Russian forces in Kursk, likely in preparation for a counteroffensive.

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Telegram post on Nov. 11 that Ukrainian forces in Kursk "are keeping almost 50,000 enemy soldiers out of Ukraine."

"We have a lot of information that North Korean soldiers are preparing to take part in combat on the side of Russian troops," Syrskiy wrote on Facebook after speaking by phone with Gen. Christopher Cavoli, who heads the US European Command. . Syrskiy told Cavoli that the situation is still challenging "and there are signs of escalation"./ REL
