This year's Climate Conference will be held in Baku, the work begins

Heads of states, ministers and other officials from nearly 200 countries of the world gather on Monday in Azerbaijan to follow the proceedings of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change.

The focus will be on how to prevent global warming, but also its deadly consequences.

In this two-week conference, financial commitments are expected to be addressed for poor countries that have been affected by heat waves, storms and floods, and that their intensity has increased due to climate change.

Developing countries and environmental organizations expect rich countries to mobilize to share at least $1 trillion a year – 10 times more than the current commitment of $100 billion a year.

To finance this increase, climate activists are proposing tax increases on the wealthy, as well as additional taxes on the extraction of coal, oil and gas.

Non-governmental organizations worry that the summit, known as the Conference of the Parties, or COP29, will be overshadowed by the victory of Donald Trump as US president.

After his election victory in 2016, he ordered the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement.

According to the reports of the American daily New York Times, during the weekend, Trump not only plans to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, but also to move the headquarters of the Environmental Protection Agency away from Washington, and that he will change the policies, which enable the extraction of oil and coal.

Tens of thousands of officials, journalists, activists and political lobbyists are expected to participate in the conference organized in Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic, in which freedom of expression is extremely limited./REL
