Biden will ask Trump to continue aid to Ukraine

President Joe Biden will discuss top US domestic and foreign policy priorities with President-elect Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House on Wednesday, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said. on sunday.

In an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation," Mr. Sullivan said President Biden's main message will be a commitment to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. President Biden, according to Mr. Sullivan, will also talk with President-elect Trump about possible developments in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

A key topic is likely to be Ukraine's war with Russia, which President-elect Trump has vowed to end quickly, though he has not provided details.

"President Biden will have the opportunity, over the next 70 days, to make the case to Congress and the next administration that the United States should not reduce support for Ukraine, and that withdrawing from Ukraine means more instability in Europe," he said. Mr. Sullivan.

"President Biden will argue the need for continued resources for Ukraine after his term ends," Mr. Sullivan said.

"President Biden will have the opportunity to explain to Mr. Trump how he assesses the situation and to get Mr. Trump's opinion on how he will handle these issues when he takes over the leadership of the country," said adviser Sullivan.

Washington has given Ukraine tens of billions of dollars in military and economic aid since Russia launched the attack in February 2022. President-elect Trump has repeatedly criticized the aid.

He insisted last year that President Vladimir Putin would never have launched the attack on Ukraine if he had been in the White House at the time. He told the Reuters news agency that Ukraine may have to give up some territory to reach a peace deal, something Ukrainians reject and President Biden has never suggested.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan also said that it is Hamas, not Israel, that is preventing a ceasefire in Gaza from being reached.

Mr. Sullivan said during the interview on the "Face the Nation" program of the CBS network, that the United States will consider allowing Israel to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, and the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, sent a letter to Israel last month asking for permission to enter Gaza for a certain number of aid trucks./ VOA
