The Taliban will participate in the UN climate conference for the first time

The Taliban will attend a United Nations climate conference for the first time since taking power in Afghanistan in 2021, the country's environment agency announced on Sunday.

The conference, known as COP29, begins Monday in Azerbaijan and is one of the most important multilateral gatherings that also includes the Taliban, who are not officially recognized as Afghanistan's legitimate leaders.

The National Environmental Protection Agency of Afghanistan announced on the X social network that it has sent a technical delegation to Baku to participate in the conference.

Matiul Haq Khalis, head of the agency, said the delegation will use the conference to strengthen cooperation with the international community on environmental protection and climate change, to share Afghanistan's needs regarding access to existing financial mechanisms for climate change and to discuss adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Experts have told The Associated Press that climate change has brought multiple and negative impacts to Afghanistan, creating serious challenges due to the country's geographic location and its weak climate policies.

In August, the international aid agency Save the Children released a report that said Afghanistan is the sixth most vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change and that 25 of its 34 provinces face severe, or catastrophic, climate conditions. drought, affecting more than half of the population.

According to the report, Afghanistan also has the highest number of children left homeless due to climate disasters of any other country by the end of 2023.

Professor Abid Arabzai from Kabul University said the climate conference will help secure international aid and funding to address Afghanistan's climate challenges.

"Afghanistan can clarify its climate actions and commitments in front of the global community, improving its international reputation," said Arabzai./ Rel
