The bloc's ambassador in Beijing: the EU does not want a trade war with

The European Union (EU) does not want a trade war with Beijing, but five years of talks have shown no real progress, the bloc's ambassador to China, Jorge Toledo, said on Saturday.

Toledo emphasized that concerns about the access of European medical equipment to the Chinese market have increased.

Trade tensions between the bloc and China have grown significantly over the past year, after the EU launched an investigation into imports of Chinese-made electric cars, prompting Beijing to launch investigations into European dairy and pork industries, such as and limit the imports of brandy.

New EU tariffs of up to 45.3 percent on electric car imports from China took effect last week.

In addition, the EU launched an investigation in April into China's public procurement of medical equipment, which was criticized at the time by Beijing.

Speaking at an event in Shanghai on Saturday, Toledo said that after talks with European medical equipment manufacturers it was realized that they were being discriminated against in China's public procurement.

"We have understood, this is clear... European companies, which have produced medical devices in China in the last two decades, are being discriminated against their Chinese competitors in public procurement procedures," said Toledo.

"If this is true, and we know it is, then we will treat Chinese companies in Europe similarly," he said.

But he added that "we don't want a trade war." We just want transparency"./ REL
