Russian drone attack causes casualties and damage in Odesa, Ukraine

Russian drones attacked the Ukrainian port city of Odesa overnight, killing one person and wounding 13 others, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on Saturday.

Several residential buildings, houses, commercial buildings and dozens of private cars were damaged by the Russian drone strike, which was the second in a row in the past two days in Odesa, Kiper said.

"The enemy attacked Odesa and the nearby region with drones again this night. One person was killed and 13 others were injured. Among the injured are two children," he said on Telegram.

Prosecutors said the injured children are boys aged 4 and 16, respectively.

Russia attacked with 51 drones, focusing its attack on Odesa and the surrounding region in southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said, adding that Ukrainian air defense units shot down 32 Russian drones.

Russian drones also caused massive fire in one of Odesa's districts, public broadcaster Suspilne reported, citing residents.

Other media outlets in the city posted footage showing cars and buildings on fire and thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Moscow's forces have stepped up airstrikes on Ukrainian towns and villages, sending swarms of drones almost every night.

Ukraine's military said Russia launched more than 2,000 attack drones against civilian and military targets in October.

Moscow says it does not attack civilians. But the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has verified 11,743 civilian deaths from conflict-related violence since Russia's full-scale occupation of Ukraine began in February 2022 until the end of August this year.

The Ukrainian government says the death toll could be much higher due to difficulties in reaching some parts of the country./REL
