Trump chooses his adviser Susie Wiles as the next chief of staff

President-elect Donald Trump named Susie Wiles, one of his campaign team leaders, as the next White House chief of staff, the first woman to hold the important post.

Ms. Wiles is widely credited inside and outside Mr. Trump's inner circle for running his latest campaign, which is seen as more disciplined. She was the main contender for this position.

She has remained largely in the shadows and even refused to take the microphone to speak as Mr Trump declared victory in the early hours of Wednesday.

The appointment of Ms. Wiles is Mr. Trump's first major decision as president-elect and could be a defining test for his next administration as he must quickly put together the team that will help run the federal government.

Ms. Wiles does not bring much federal government experience to the role, but she has a close relationship with the president-elect. During the campaign, she managed to do what few others have been able to do - help control Mr Trump's impulses, earn his respect and show that he is better off following her advice than his. ignored them.

"Susie is strong, smart, creative and admired and respected around the world. Susie will continue to work tirelessly to make America great again," Mr Trump said in a statement. "She fully deserves to be the first female chief of staff in the history of the United States. I have no doubt that she will make our country proud."

Chiefs of staff serve as the president's most trusted confidants, help execute the president's agenda, and balance policy priorities.
